About Pastor Dave
Dr. Dave Kivett is a graduate of the University of Georgia (BBA, Economics) and Union Presbyterian Seminary (D.Min). He served as the associate pastor at the Presbyterian Church, Bowling Green, KY for seven years, as the pastor at First Presbyterian Church, Reidsville, NC for nine years, as pastor/head of staff at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Tucker, GA (an Atlanta suburb) for eleven years and for a year and half as the interim pastor at Northside Presbyterian Church, Chattanooga, TN.
He enjoys a team approach to ministry and believes the best grade one can get on their report card is ‘plays well with other children.’ He has been actively involved in the communities he has served working with other churches to start a Habitat for Humanity affiliate in Kentucky and cooperative ministries to help neighbors in need in both North Carolina and Georgia.
In the Cedar Valley, Dave has been active in various leadership roles with the Cedar Valley Interfaith Council, the local chapter of the NAACP and the Cedar Falls Human Rights Commission. He has particularly enjoyed serving as one of the chefs with the Sunday Supper Community Meal. He has also been an active presbytery, serving on the Committee on Ministry and working with churches in transition and in conflict. He is a native Southerner who will always refer to syruppy, carbonated beverages no matter the flavor or brand as a ‘coke’.

How long have you served CHCPC? Since January 2015
Tell us about your family: Married to lovely wife, Beth, for 25 years. We have four grown children – Grace who lives in Waterloo and works at Orkin. Jerry and his husband Alex who live in Asheville NC where Jerry works with homeless veterans as a social worker with the Veterans Administration. Jerry’s twin sister, Sophie Ann, who is an attorney at Sullivan & Cromwell in New York City. Durham, the oldest, lives in Greensboro NC with his wife Anna and their son, Leo, born in August. First grandchild! Durham is a mortgage broker with the State Employees Credit Union. The Kivett home also includes three cats and one very large dog.
Who are people that inspire you? My inspirations are first and foremost my parents, Ann and Jerry Kivett. The congregation has heard their names come up in a sermon or two. My other heroes are Atticus Finch from “To Kill a Mockingbird”, the many brave women and men of the Civil Rights Movement in this country and Nelson Mandela.
What is one thing that most people don’t know about you? I cannot wink.
Do you have any weird quirks? I hold my pen with the wrong fingers.
What is your least favorite thing to do? Long meetings!
Hidden talent? I do not know as it is well hidden.
What makes you laugh? Lots of things including laughing at myself!
What is your biggest fear? I had a long-standing fear of being pinched by crabs at the beach. Didn’t really put my feet down in the ocean until I had twins I needed to hold.
